一个词根构成的单词:fact(做)→ fact(事实)。
词根+ 词根构成的单词:manu(手)+(写)→ manu(手稿)。
词根+ 词缀构成的单词:govern(管理)+ment(后缀)→ government(政府,内阁)。
加前缀:im(入)+port(运)→ import(输入,进口)。

③词根、词缀能帮我们做什么?
第一,更准确地理解、记忆单词词义。
单词bicycle(自行车)是由bi+cycle 组成。其中词根cycle 是“循环、圆圈”的意思,前缀bi 表示“两个,双倍的”——两个圆圈组成了自行车。同样tri“三个、三倍的”+cycle“循环、圆圈”构成了tricycle(三轮车)。
单词embed 表示“安置,嵌于”,可以拆分成两个部分:em(进入) +bed(范围:床,本义是“坑”)→进入范围(进入坑)→安置,嵌于。

一个词根可能带出的是一组词汇,记住词根、词缀相当于缩短了每个单词的记忆单元。如import 这个单词,如果死记硬背是i、m、p、o、r、t 六个记忆单元,而拆分成im(入)+port(运)=import(输入、进口),就变成了两个记忆单元。
在记忆学里,记忆单元越少,相对来说就记得越快,相同的时间内词汇量扩充得越多。另外,词根还有迁移性,如port 可以在import 里担当重任, 也在transportation、opportunity、passport、report、sport、airport、support、unimportant、importance、important 等这一族群中堪当大任。
3. 隐藏在语音里的秘密
英语属于印欧语系,后来由于群族迁移到不同的地方,才使得语言发生了变化。这种变化类似于汉语方言的变化,有很强的规律性。英语中大量的同源词就是通过音变派生出来的。
而且英语单词由若干字母组成,发音不同,写法自然也不同,字母有规律变换后,写法不同,但基本的意思不变。
① b-p-f-v-w 音。
中文的“泊”有两种发音:“漂泊(bó)”和“湖泊(pō)”;“番”也有两种发音:“ 番(f ān)茄”和“番(pān)禺”。英语中burse 与purse 都指“钱包”,词根scrib 与 相对应;live(生活)与life(生命),give(给) 与gift(礼物),save(救)与safe(安全),都体现了f 与v 的对应转换; wine(葡萄酒)与vine(葡萄树),体现了w 与v 的对应。
② g-c-k-h 音。
中文中,如“咖”有两种发音:“咖(gā)喱”和“咖(kā)啡”; “会”有两种发音:“会(huì)议”和“会(kuài)计”。英语中,angle(角度)与ankle(踝),guest(客人)与host(主人)相对应;英语中c 与k 的音相同,语义上也相关,如cat(猫)与 kitty(小猫);c 与h 经常对应, color 与hole 的col 和hol 表示“遮盖,隐藏”,color 指一种色可以遮盖另一种色,hole 是可以“隐藏”的地方。
③ d-t-th-s 音。
中文中“弹”有两种发音:“子弹(dàn)”与“弹(tán)钢琴”。英语中,词根里的d 与t 也会出现对应或替换的现象。
④ a-o-e-i-u 音。
不仅仅是辅音字母有转换的情况,英语中元音字母也存在这样互转的情况,替换后词根的基本意思并没有大的改变。
如:gold(黄金)与gild(镀金),就是典型的o-i 互换;cap,cip, cup,capt,cept 都有“抓”的意思;同源异形根band,bend,bind,bond, bund 都有“绑”的意思。
